How well we understand one another can have a wide-reaching impact on our lives. From partner choice to the friends we surround ourselves with.
If like me, you’ve made the odd poor choice in the past, perhaps you’ve placed trust in the wrong person; this single insight may prove invaluable to you too.
I have personally found this single point of insight the most powerful and accurate way to quickly judge whether or not someone is right for me, as a partner or trusted friend.
While it may sound harsh to judge someone on a single trait or behavior, I’ve felt the consequences of the opposite inclination far too deeply— for many years I excused and accepted poor behaviors from partners and friends.
But no more.
Now I am discerning in the beginning to avoid long-term pain for all involved and there’s one single thing I pay attention to:
The one thing that gives true insight into someone’s character is how they behave when someone wrongs them.
If someone behaves fairly when wronged, it says more about them in an instant than weeks of conversation can reveal.
The night I met my ex, someone spilled a pint of beer on him. It was a complete accident and the man apologized. He pushed the guy over, called him some choice words, and then sulked for an hour after he was evicted from the bar by the security staff.
Alarm bells did not ring. They should have.
He went on to become the moodiest and most irascible partner I’ve ever had the displeasure of knowing. The anti-social and anger management issues were also significant.
The night I met my now partner, I bumped an advertisement banner while we were dancing.
