What Pleases Your Soul? Do That — Today.

Why we need to listen to our soul and no one else today.

Covid 19 has had a huge impact on lives in most countries. Really HUGE. We’ve been separated from our families for a year. Lived in a small bubble. Worked from home. Missed restaurants, nights out, cinemas, even Christmas.

We have suffered.

Not the kind of suffering that many experience in their lives, but this year has hurt us.

We need to sit with that a moment; not to reflect on the pain, the loss, the injustices…but to acknowledge that we have been through something. In many countries, we are still going through it.

I saw one of those really annoying inspirational quotes today, as I scrolled mindlessly for yet another hour. But what else is there to do right now? In a country that’s closed, right?

I hate inspirational quotes. I actually speed scroll past them in the hope that Zuckerberg’s algorithm will notice and stop serving them to me.

But this one.

This one touched me. Urghhhh. So cliche. Believe me, I hate writing it more than you hate reading it.

But it said this:

What Pleases Your Soul? Do That — Today.

…and I realized that I hadn’t done anything that pleases my soul for a long, long time.

As I’m prone to doing, I twirled this thought around for a while…

My mental health has suffered hugely since 2020 — largely unrelated to Covid. The mental health of those around me has declined too — definitely related to Covid.

My Doctor told me that she’s spoken with more people experiencing severe mental health issues for the first time in 2020, than ever before. We are yet to understand the long-term impact of this lockdown year on our well-being, but we are seeing the short-term impact every day.

I’m seeing the most naturally optimistic and positive people that I know, have ‘down days.’

I’m seeing more loved ones struggling to remember what they do for fun, or what fun feels likes.

I’m seeing more lethargy, inactivity, and indifference.

There seems to be a sense of endless stagnation that has no end date. Everything can be put off until tomorrow because there is nothing better to do tomorrow, so why not?

That’s why this silly inspirational quote caught my eye.

We must stay in touch with that part of our soul that sings. That part of us that loves and laughs and feels excitement, happiness, pleasure.

What Pleases Your Soul? Do That — Today.

If you can access happiness today, through an activity, a conversation, or anything in between…do it. And do it today.

It’s vital that we boost our collective happiness levels as much as we can, as often as we can. Now more than ever.

We can’t sit and wait for the joie de vivre that will burst out of us when Covid is conquered, we need to keep in touch with our centers of joy today.

Think of your own soul as a best friend whose phone number you’ll eventually forget if you don’t call it often enough.
